Carving

I have recently rediscovered my joy in working in three dimensions.

This came about during lock-down during many walks through local woodland.

The calming and reflective effect of being out in nature during those times was invaluable and the physicality of carving wood became almost a therapeutic act, as ancient as mankind.

My intent was to celebrate our woodland, using foraged timber that had been taken down through necessity or disease.

The carved figurines became small "Muses", reminiscent of small votive sculpture from ancient Greek and Roman culture, but rather than representing the traditional art-forms such as poetry or music they are intended to invite contemplation on more personal things which inspire, entertain, or trouble us.

I hope to achieve a level of spontaneity in my carving.

These sculptures each have their own particular meaning for me but I hope others will find their own resonances and enjoyment within them...
